We did the same with similarly aged kids and all I can say is ...


let them say goodbye at home and don't bring them with you to the vet. My kids understood that you don't want the dog to suffer and that it isn't going to get better. Also, never hurts to buy them ice cream or something to cheer them up. I found it is a lot more difficult when the kids get older - had to put a cat down when my daughter was 15 and she was in a deep state of depression for a very long time as it was pretty much her cat.
